Schedule Link is an application
that allows the Deloitte and Touche HR department to manage
and track hours for all employees in the United States. It
was created as a citrix application, mimicking a simple user
interface and a basic Windows-style interaction.
Challenge:
The company chose to build an in-house replacement application,
using java served through an online interface. After two years
of gathering requirements, documenting their approach, and
launching the new scheduling application, the Deloitte HR
team chose to pull the plug on the application after only
two weeks of use!
Why? Common tasks took too long to complete. Though the user
interface was a dramatic change from their previous application,
along with other improvements, the basic choices created an
interface with too many clicks, page-load time issues, and
basic user-path problems.

Solution:
We worked directly with the Deloitte Business Analyst responsible
for documenting requirements for the now failed application.
We help to refine their approach and leverage user centered
design principals for addressing usability issues as part
of their new methodology. Existing design documents were evaluated
against our standard design templates to perform a gap analysis.
Heuristic evaluation of the new system were gathered and each
task a user would perform was ranked against clicks to complete
to identify time to complete issues. Use Cases were broken
into true components allowing us to redesign user paths leveraging
functions to create streamlined user paths. We also spent
time working with the old system to identify what user found
useful. We provided an approach for documenting what worked
and leveraging that for creating a new system.
