In 2001 BHP and Billiton, then
two separate companies merged creating BHP Billiton. BHP Billiton
is the world’s largest diversified resources company.
Challenge:
As these two large companies merged they realized they had
many cast amounts of internal knowledge and no single vehicle
to share their leanings across the business. While working
as part of a large multidisciplinary team (1) including 3rd
party technology vendors (CSC and BHP Billiton internal staff)
we set out to audit and analyze over 100 intranet sites and
develop a point of view on the structure, functionality and
content as they related to end users. We were looking for
ways the new merged business could leverage each others knowledge
sharing acumen.

Solution:
A massive content and functionality audit was conducted and
key players from around the globe came to share their own
intranets and to discuss the innovations they used to achieve
their results. A strategic framework and global link directory
was developed to share all of the intranets across BHP Billiton.
This way each of the new teams could easily utilize each other's
information. The platform was flexible, built on Documentum
technology and provided a usable solution to house all of
their data.
